A legendary figure in American music joined the Gathering during its “Traditional Song Week” launch: Jean Ritchie, born and raised in Viper, Kentucky in the heart of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Jean was an important figure on the New York folk scene in the 1950s and is credited with reviving interest in the mountain dulcimer, once a regional folk instrument only. In her long career, she has recorded more than 30 albums, published 10 books and won numerous awards, including the nation’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts: the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship.
